Nestled along Kenya’s coastal region, the Rotary Club of Mombasa has been a pillar of community service since its inception in 1944. This venerable institution, holding the distinction of being the second oldest Rotary club in District 9212, has woven itself into the fabric of local development for nearly eight decades.
In 1991, the club embarked on a transformative journey in Makanzani Village, starting with a crucial water project. This initial step has since blossomed into a comprehensive development initiative that has reshaped the village’s landscape and improved residents’ lives. Over the years, the Rotary Club of Mombasa, in collaboration with partners like the INNERWHEEL organization, has established vital infrastructure in Makanzani.
The village now boasts a nursery school, replacing the former Makuti shed classrooms, a medical clinic, a maternity clinic, and various water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. A cornerstone of their ongoing efforts is the ICT and Trade Center at Makanzani Primary School, equipping local youth with essential skills for the modern world.
Looking ahead, the club plans to further its commitment by constructing a secondary school, ensuring continuous educational opportunities for the community.
As the club continues its impactful work, it also prepares to showcase Mombasa’s hospitality on a larger stage. The town will host the 100th District Conference and Awards from May 15-18,2025, celebrating a century of Rotary service in the region.
The Rotary Club of Mombasa meets every other Wednesday, from 12:30 to 2 pm, at Mombasa Chini Club.
