The Rotary movement was first initiated in Mombasa in the late 1943 by Charles Norman who was then the District Commissioner of Mombasa and as such the Chairman of the Municipal Board of Mombasa. He was transferred to Mombasa from Palestine where he had witnessed that in spite of political hostilities and differences all major communities were in a friendly atmosphere in Rotary.
In 1943, with the exception of South Africa and Rhodesia, there was only one Rotary Club South of Sahara and that was the Rotary Club of Nairobi. Toward the end of 1943 Charles Norman established 21 potential members, mainly connected with the Municipal Board of Mombasa and arranged with the Rotary Club of Nairobi to sponsor a Rotary Club in Mombasa. This was to become the first multiracial club South of the Sahara.
The inauguration meeting of the proposed club was held on 28th October, 1943 in the Board Room of Municipal Board of Mombasa and on 16th November, 1943 the Rotary Club of Mombasa was provisionally formed, with its first meeting held at Manor Hotel. Charles Norman was appointed its provincial Chairman with Mr. McIntyre, the Municipal Engineer, as the Club’s first secretary followed by other office bearers and members.
